Pre-writing techniques

In our second class, the teacher introduced us the pre-writing techniques. These techniques are used in writing to generate and classify ideas. There are several effective prewriting activities to implement than directly start by making an outline. Another name for these prewriting techniques is “brainstorming techniques”.  There are five useful strategies which are listing, clustering and freewriting. Listing is a process of generating a lot of information within a short time by generating some ideas and then associate those ideas in more detail. Listing is useful if your starting topic is very general. Furthermore, clustering is a technique that allows you to connect and contrast numerous ideas. Additionally, it lets you see your ideas visually in order to understand various directions your paper could take. Academic sources

The goal for this unit was learning more about plagiarism and how to support the arguments with evidence using APA style. The ppts and documents on blackboard helped me understand better about academic sources. We started the unit watching a video about plagiarism. This video helped a lot because it solved my doubts. According to the APA style, the hand outs were useful. In the past, I have always had trouble with appropriate citation; however, I will keep these two documents on blackboard for my personal use due to its concise information. Moreover, the exercises in class allowed me to practice harder and differentiate paraphrasing, summarizing and quoting. I found the chart below particularly interesting because it is very clear and easy to understand. Besides, we did many exercises about paraphrasing and summarizing. Final session!

My final thougths I truly believe that this course was really helpful for me because I learned many important things about academic writing. The structure of the course was well organized, we started from the basics and ended up writing different types of academic essays. Definetly all the knowledge acquired in this course wil be usfeul for my future specially in my carrer which is Translation and Interpreting. I feel more confident about my writing skills than in the past. There were challenges along the way, however, that did not stop me. I really loved the course and hope to take another similar in the future.
